The increased computing power available to make machines “intelligent” has enabled systems designers to produce ever more complex materials handling systems whose applications extend ever wider.

The development of these smarter, faster systems able to efficiently and cost effectively support today’s workplaces has been almost exponential during the last twenty years mirroring the impact of computers upon the workplace in general. Efficiency, speed, accuracy and reliability are all demands which favour automation of processes and materials handling.

An appreciation of the advances that have taken place and those continual changes and developments that are being undertaken is especially visible in manufacturing industry particularly the automotive, nuclear, pharmaceutical and semi-conductor industries. Retailers, airports; distribution warehousing and increasingly hospitals are all areas where automation of the flow of materials is becoming increasingly widespread.
